What is AWS?

AWS (Amazon Web Services) is a comprehensive, evolving cloud computing platform from Amazon that includes a mix of infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), platform-as-a-service (PaaS) and packaged-software-as-a-service (SaaS). AWS services can provide an organization with resources such as computing power, database storage and content delivery services.

Amazon.com Web Services launched its first Web services in 2002 from the internal infrastructure Amazon.com built to handle its online retail operations. In 2006, it began offering its defining IaaS services. AWS was one of the first companies to introduce a pay-as-you-go cloud computing model that offers users compute, storage or throughput as needed.

AWS offers many different tools and solutions for enterprises and software developers that can be used in data centers in as many as 190 countries. Groups such as government agencies, educational institutions, non-profits and private organizations can use AWS services.

How does AWS work?

AWS is divided into several services, each of which can be configured in different ways based on user needs. Users can view configuration options and individual server maps for an AWS service.

The AWS portfolio includes more than 200 services, including computing, database, infrastructure management, application development and security services. These services, by category, include the following:

  • Compute
  • Storage
  • Databases
  • Data management
  • Migration
  • Hybrid cloud
  • Networking
  • Development tools
  • Management
  • Monitoring
  • Security
  • Governance
  • Big data management
  • Analytics
  • Artificial intelligence (AI)
  • Mobile development
  • Messages and notification

Passing AWS exams

Individuals who demonstrate relevant knowledge, skills and abilities receive AWS certification from Amazon Web Services. The company works with AWS specialists to set the bar for necessary experience in common functions in the cloud and technical skills in specialized areas. One must attend and pass one of the company's AWS certification exams to meet this criterion, after which AWS awards the individual an AWS certification.

Passing a timed, proctored test is required to secure certification. Each exam has a set number of questions, a time limit and a pass rate. Candidates should view sample questions like the ones below and take a few practice tests online before taking the test. This ensures that you know what topics to cover, what is out of scope, relevant practice experience and other requirements.

Here's how AWS can help your business - benefits of AWS

Amazon Web Services is a highly reliable cloudbased infrastructure platform used by thousands of companies around the world as the backbone of their websites and Web-based applications. There are plenty of reasons why large companies such as Pinterest, Netflix, Expedia and LinkedIn rely on their services to operate.

The points below demonstrate how AWS can be useful for your business. Regardless of whether you are a small organization or a medium-sized business, AWS will help your business for the better in the long run.

Lower upfront costs
AWS has more than 100 tools that you can purchase individually, based on your business needs. This means you don't have to invest money months in advance to set up countless servers. Just choose the services your business needs and scale them along with it. The best part is that you don't blindly jump into these services -AWS has free access for a year, so you can get a good feel for their tools. Pay only for the ones you know you will use and eliminate the ones that have no use for your business.

Use only the resources you need
You no longer have to feel guilty about wasting unused resources or worry that your storage capacity might not be enough. With AWS, you don't have to guess how much capacity your business needs. Their pricing system requires that you only pay based on usage, and if you need to reduce or increase capacity, you can do so with just a few clicks.

This is very convenient for business owners who worry about paying too much for storage and cloud processing. AWS' commitmentless model allows you to be cost-efficient by spending only on what you need - not even for a month, but only for every hour you use.

Simple data management
AWS data is housed in different regions around the world. Thanks to the cloud-based system, you can access your data within minutes. You no longer need to set up and maintain your own servers. That's just more stress and money out of your pocket. Instead, you can leave it to the experts at AWS who will make sure your company's infrastructure runs efficiently.

Better security
Again, why do it yourself when there are experts who can do it better than you? Not to mention, they do it at a price that won't hurt your budget. Because the infrastructure of many Fortune 500 companies has been entrusted to them, you can rest assured that your data is safe with AWS. They have a very robust security system that gives you enough peace of mind to focus on your business.

Plus, you can customize your own infrastructure security by giving each member very specific access and tracking each user's changes. And should problems arise, you can call on their data experts who are available 24/7.

Data Agility and Resilience
Sometimes it takes months for your developers to create the "homebrew" assets your business needs. Then you risk those innovations failing.

With AWS, you can run your business significantly faster because the tools you need are just a click away. And because Amazon is a world leader and AWS has more than a decade of experience, you can rest easy knowing that your company's infrastructure is running efficiently and securely.

User-friendly
Implementing foreign tools and services can often be a source of frustration in your business. AWS is very flexible in that they give you the freedom to choose which database, programming language and operating system to use. This means your team members are not forced to learn something they are not familiar with. The ability to customize these tools to your needs means you can continue to run your business without wasting time.

History of AWS

The AWS platform was launched in 2002 with some services. In 2003, it was revised to standardize, automate and focus Amazon's computing infrastructure on Web services. This change included the idea of selling access to a virtual-servers-as-a-service platform. In 2004, the first publicly available AWS service - Amazon SQS - was launched.

In 2006, AWS relaunched with three services - Amazon S3, SQS and EC2 - making AWS officially a suite of core online services. In 2009, S3 and EC2 were launched in Europe and Elastic Block Store and Amazon CloudFront were released and incorporated into AWS. In 2013, AWS began offering a certification process for AWS services, and an autoscaling service was released in 2018.

Today, AWS offers more than 200 services and has data centers around the world that make it a highly available and scalable platform.

AWS has acquired several organizations. Generally, it has not acquired larger established companies, but smaller organizations and startups that enhance and improve the cloud provider's existing offerings. Here are some of its recent acquisitions:

  • DataRow in 2020, a startup that specialized in a Web-based client for Amazon Redshift, its cloud data warehouse;
  • TSO Logic in 2019, a cloud migration company providing analytics that allows customers to view the state of their data center and model a migration to the cloud;
  • CloudEndure in 2019, a company focused on workload migrations to the public cloud, disaster recovery and backup; and
  • Sqrrl in 2018, a security startup that collects data from points such as gateways, servers and routers and puts those findings into a security dashboard.

AWS is the most widely used cloud platform in the cloud market.
